Abstract

A gas spring for the rear door of an automobile has a cylinder (1) with an end wall (2) and sealing caps (10, 12) at the opposite end. The piston rod (5) is sealed by rings (11, 13) fitting in the end caps. The plastics piston (4) is fixed to the piston rod by the spring ring (6) and by the spring (9) which presses the washer (8) over the holes (7) to form a non-return valve. A radial clearance (a) between the piston and cylinder wall eliminates friction between these parts. The cylinder is filled with compressed gas which tends to keep the piston rod in its extended position. When an axial load is applied to the rod the gas flows through the holes (7) and through the clearance (a). The holes may be eliminated if the clearance is sufficiently large.
