Abstract

The gas spring has a slidable piston with axial bores permitting gas to flow between two cylinder chambers. The piston is connected to a rod which passes through one end of the cylinder, the piston rod being seald to the cylinder. A sliding element is biassed to a predetermined position by a spring to close some of the piston bores. The piston has a skirt which covers further bores when the piston moves in a direction to extend the rod. The compressed gas used in the spring is prf. nitrogen, the sliding element being formed of an elastometer material.
