Abstract
The gas spring consists of a cylinder (1) and piston (7). The piston has a limited degree of axial travel between the fixed sleeve (61) and the retaining washer (62). An orifice (74) connects the radial grooves (710, 720) on opposite sides of the piston (7). When the piston moves towards the closed end of the cylinder (1), the gas pressure forces it against the sleeve (61) so that there is a gap between the piston (7) and the washer (62) giving the maximum opening of the orifice (710) and so providing only minimum damping. Movement in the opposite direction closes the gap so that the orifice (710) is partly obstructed by the washer (6), providing maximum damping.
