Abstract

1,184,531. Welding by pressure. J. D. SNITGEN. 8 March, 1968 [8 March, 1967], No. 11450/68. Heading B3R. [Also in Division F1] The rod 47 Fig. 1 of a compressed air actuated cup-shaped piston 28 slidably extends through and is coupled by a coil spring 107 to a sleeve secured to the R.H.S. of an hydraulic piston 57 and projects into an oil-filled cavity 51 formed in an extension 12 on the L.H.S. of piston 57 and serving to transmit force to a workpiece e.g. one or both electrodes of a spotwelding apparatus, the cavity 51 being in open communication through inclined passages 95 with an oil-filled cylinder space 64 Fig. 2 and also being connected to a cylinder space 65 through radial ports 101 until the latter become blocked by the end 49 of rod 47; the arrangement being that on admission of low pressure compressed air to the R.H.S. of piston 28 and assuming extension 12 to be unloaded, said piston 28 and rod 47 carry piston 57 forward at a fast rate and without relative displacement by virtue of the reaction of coil spring 107 until when extension 12 meets resistance offered by a workpiece, rod 47 moves forward relative to piston 57 so as to close radial ports 101 and thus force oil at high pressure from cavity 51, through passages 95 into cylinder space 64 thereby urging piston 57 and extension 12 forwardly at a slow rate and high force.
