Abstract

1470960 Shock absorbers ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO Ltd 10 June 1974 [9 June 1973] 27542/73 Heading F2S A shock absorber comprises a cylinder 52, a piston unit 50 slidable in the cylinder, a pressure chamber 72, 74 defined by the piston unit and the cylinder for containing a flowable material (e.g. liquid) and an annular clearance 70 between the piston unit and the cylinder which provides communication between the parts 72 and 74 of the pressure chamber, the annular clearance increasing in length, so as to provide an increasing resistance to flow, as the piston unit moves into the cylinder, over the full stroke of the piston unit. On compression, liquid flows from 74 to 72 and then into a reservoir space 86, inside the piston unit, pressurized by a gas space 88. In the drawing (not shown) accompanying the provisional specification, the inner end of the piston unit is closed, and the pressure chamber (32, 34) communicates with the reservoir in the piston unit via bores (36) in the wall of the piston unit.
