1312380 Shock absorbers AUTOIPARI KUTATO INTEZET 14 Aug 1970 39270/70 Heading F2S In a shock absorber comprising a cylinder 5 separated into two chambers by a valved piston 7, one chamber containing liquid and the other containing liquid and gas in direct contact, a closable filling tube 4 extends into the latter chamber, which functions as a reservoir to accommodate piston rod volume changes. The length of the tube determines the extent to which the liquid will rise during filling, and is calculated so that even when the shock absorber is fully contracted there will still be liquid above the piston. When the cylinder has been filled with liquid as far as the mouth of the filling element, the shock absorber is fully expanded to draw in air, before the tube is closed off. Expansion of the shock absorber is much more heavily damped than compression, the total area of the bores in the piston which conduct liquid from the space above to the space below the piston during the compression stroke being at least 15% of the effective area of the piston.
