Abstract

The hydraulic shock absorber has a rubber block (54) which adjusts the damping rate as the speed of piston displacement is varied. The block is between the end of the outer cylinder (8) of the damper and the smaller diameter cylindrical extension (56) of the oil reservoir, which is rigidly fixed to the vehicle (58). Inside the cylindrical extension is a non return valve (62) separating the reservoir from a space (63) connected (24) to the volume (8b) between the damper walls. During high speed compression, the damper unit moves as a whole and the rubber block deforms. This reduces the volume of the space (63) and oil flows through the non return valve to the reservoir. At the same time, the pressure in the outer jacket (8b) rises and causes a flexible diaphragm (11) to displace, against a reference pressure (10), a relief valve (14) from its seat, so reducing the damping rate.
