Abstract

1334690 Adjustable hydropneumatic shock absorbers C B DE CARBON 26 Oct 1970 [29 Oct 1969] 50812/70 Heading F2S The height of a piston-cylinder hydropneumatic shock absorber on a vehicle is varied by adjusting the position in the cylinder 1 of a slidable piston 14. Adjustment is effected (Fig. 1) by a screw-threaded rod 13 and knurled wheel 13a, or (Fig. 2) by fluid under pressure supplied, through a bore 1b in the end connection 1a, from a manually or vehicle-engine operated pump, or from a container on the part 1a containing liquefied gas or solid carbon dioxide and controlled by a cock. The gas and liquid in the shock absorber are separated by a diaphragm 9 or a further floating piston 16. In Fig. 1 the space 10 is in liquid communication with the working cylinder via ports 12 and grooves 12a. If the shock absorber of Fig. 2 is used in a telescopic motor cycle fork, the suspension spring may be located outside the cylinder, or between the working piston 2 and the floating piston 16. Alternatively the gas above the floating piston may itself constitute the suspension spring.
