Abstract

969,703. Hydropneumatic shock absorbers. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 23, 1963 [Aug. 18, 1962], No. 31785/62. Heading F2S. [Also in Division B7] A constant-length spring unit for use in a vehicle suspension comprises a cylinder 43 having at one end a liquid reservoir 72 bounded by a flexible membrane 70, and a gas spring 71 to which gas under pressure may be admitted through a non-return valve 51 formed in a stem 50 to which is attached a securing device comprising a hemispherical member 52, rubber mounting 53 and securing member 54. The liquid chamber 72 communicatse with the interior of a cylinder 55 via a two-way damping valve 73, the cylinders 55 and 43 being closed at the other end by a member 45 incorporating a one-way valve 60, and providing a seal for a piston rod 56 having a piston 57 working in the cylinder 55. A space 59 surrounding the piston rod 56 connects with the one-way valve 60 and also through a passage 63 and one-way valve 64 with the upper space 65 within the cylinder 55 which also connects through an aperture 75 with the annular chamber 61 between the cylinders 55 and 43 which contains a flexible cell 68 containing gas under pressure. Upon an upward movement of the piston from the position shown, a spring action is obtained from the gas spring 71 and liquid enters the space 59 through the valve 60. Upon a return movement of the piston, liquid passes through the valve 64 so that the mean position of working of the piston is forced further down the cylinder until the point is reached where liquid escapes through the passage 75 into the chamber 61. Specification 969,702 is referred to.
