457,730. Shock - absorbers. HENSS, P., Salzderhelden, Germany. May 4, 1936, No. 12562. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1935. [Class 108 (iii)] A shock - absorbing or pneumatic suspension device for vehicles comprises a bowlshaped rubber body b the rim b<1> of which abuts and, when compressed, expands against a plate d secured for example to the vehicle frame, and the interior of which is in communication with the atmosphere. The rubber body is enclosed in a casing c the lower end c<1> of which acts as a guide for a rod a which is connected to one of the vehicle road-wheels and supports the body b at its upper end. As shown, free exit of fluid from the bowl on compression of the device is permitted by a non-return valve f but the return flow is restricted by a port g in the valve. When the device is used as a vehicle suspension the valve may act in the opposite way so that the fluid-pressure in the bowl increases on compression. Shock is also partly absorbed by the expansion of the rubber body and by the friction between the rim of the body and the plate d, which may be reduced by coating the plate d with glycerine &c. In order to increase the stroke of the rod a, the plate d may be made conical. The valve f f may be replaced by a small hole in the plate d.
