Abstract
585,261. Shock-absorbers. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and MILLARD, H. V. Feb. 5, 1945, No. 2886. [Class 108 (iii)] A shock-absorbing suspension device, particularly for the wheel-carrying leg of an aircraft undercarriage, comprises two annular chambers 34 and 35, 36 of different crosssectional area formed between a cylinder 19 and a two-diameter plunger 13, 22, a piston 20 which separates the chambers and is moved on relative movement of the plunger and cylinder to increase the length of one chamber and simultaneously reduce the length of the other, a floating partition 29 in the chamber 35, 36 confining compressed gas in the portion 36, and damping liquid filling the chamber 34 and the chamber portion 35, means being provided to permit controlled flow of liquid past the piston as the plunger slides along the cylinder. As shown, the upper and lower parts 22, 13 of the plunger are secured to the piston 20 and are slidable respectively in cylinder bushes 23, 27, the downward movement of the part 13 being limited by the engagement of a stop collar 25 thereon with the bush 23. In known manner, a valve 33 controls flow of liquid through passages 32 in the piston, permitting relatively free flow on compression of the shock absorber, when liquid is forced from the chamber 34 to the chamber portion 35 compressing the gas in the chamber portion 36, but restricting the flow on extension when the gas expands to force liquid back to the chamber 34. The plunger part 22 may be secured to the bush 23 and slidable relatively to the piston. In another modification, the gas in the chamber portion 36 is contained in a flexible bladder of enless tube form. As applied to an aircraft leg, the plunger part 13 carries the wheel axle and, to prevent turning, is connected by a V-linkage in known manner to the cylinder.
