Abstract

493,157. Hydraulic shock absorbers. FICHTEL & SACHS AKT.-GES. May 13, 1937, No. 13585. Convention date, May 16, 1936. [Class 108 (iii)] In a vehicle hydraulic shock-absorber of the piston-and-cylinder ype, the piston 18, Fig. 1, is provided with a passage controlled by a non- return valve 17 and always forces the liquid in one direction only from the cylinder 10 through a chamber 12, excess liquid passes from the chamber 12 to a compensating chamber 14 through an adjustable non-return valve 15, the ch mbers 12, 14 which are concentric with the cylinder 10 open at one end of the cylinder into a common valve-chamber, and the liquid returns to the cylinder through a further non-return valve 16. On compression of the shock-absorber, the valve 16 closes an opening in the lower end of the cylinder and liquid is forced past the spring-pressed valve 17 and through apertures 20 in the piston 18 and then, due to the entry into the cylinder of the piston-rod 19, from the upper end of the cylinder, through the chamber 12, past the valve 15 into the valve-chamber 13 and compensating chamber 14. On extension the valve 17 closes and the liquid above the piston follows the same path, liquid also being sucked in beneath the piston past the valve 16. Fig. 2 shows a construction applicable to an independent wheel suspension incorporating a supporting spring 25, the chamber 12 being constituted by the bore of the hollow pistonrod 19 and the chamber 14 by the spring casing 24, while the valve 15 is arranged at the upper end of the piston-rod 19. In this construction on compression of the shockabsorber, liquid is forced from the lower end of the cylinder 10 past the valve 17, through the piston-rod, past the valve 15, and into the casing 24, while on extension of the device, the liquid flows only from the annular space between the piston-rod and cylinder.
