Abstract

690,459. Hydraulic dampers. KRONPRINZ AKT.-GES. FUR METALLINDUSTRIE. Aug. 14, 1951 [Aug. 14, 1950], No. 19186/51. Class 108 (iii). A shock absorber for motor cycle forks, comprises an outer tube 1 rigid with the cycle forks and having a constricted portion 4 surrounding an openended inner tube 2 connected to the cycle wheel, the tube 2 having a pistonlike enlargement 5, a spring 7, 8 disposed between the piston 5 and the end of the outer tube 1, holes 6 in the wall of the inner tube 2 in the vicinity of the constricted portion 4 (when the shock absorber is in its inoperative position), and an air cushion 14 above the liquid 12 in the two tubes 1, 2. A slidable annulus 9 may divide the spring 7, 8 into two sections as shown, and this may act as a piston valve in relation to ports 11 in the tube 1. In operation, on compression, the spring 8 is compressed to a greater extent than the spring 7 owing to the damping of liquid flow past the annulus 9. On rebound the holes 6 are cut-off by the constricted portion 4.
