Abstract
693,660. Hydraulic dampers. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. April 24, 1951 [April 25, 1950], No. 9537/51. Class 108 (iii). A piston - and -cylinderhydraulic damper has a by pass operative in the middle range of movement of the piston 9, formed by a longitudinal by-pass slot 13 in an auxiliary cylinder 11 which is slidable within the main cylinder 3, a driving connection being provided between the piston 9 and the auxiliary cylinder 11. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the driving connection comprises springs 14, 14a. In operation, on relatively small deflections of the piston rod 6 in either direction, liquid is displaced from one side to the other of the piston 9 via the slot 13. On larger deflections, the piston 9 cuts off the end of the slot 13, and a positive thrust is applied to the cylinder 11. Greater damping then occurs by virtue of the damping produced on compressions and rebound respectively by the flow through orifices 23, 23<1> in the flap valves 18, 18<1>. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the valve 23<1> may be carried by the piston 9. The piston head 15 on the cylinder 11 is then dispensed with and the cylinder 11 is open-ended. The slot 13 may or may not be assymmetrically disposed in relation to the normal inoperative position of the piston (e.g. by suitable dimensioning of the springs 14, 14a). There may be a plurality of slots 13. Damping is arranged to be greater on the rebound stroke.
