Abstract
694,544. Hydraulic shock absorbers. STROZZI, F. Sept. 17, 1951 [Oct. 31, 1950]. No. 21728/51. Class 108 (iii). An hydraulic shock absorber comprises a fluid reservoir 2 formed by a corrugated flexible casing 1a (or telescopic tubes), valves 13, 15 respectively controlling flow in opposite directions through the piston, the opening pressure of one of the valves, 15, being adjustable by means 22a operable from outside the shock absorber, and valves 27, 32 respectively controlling the flow in each direction between the cylinder 1 and reservoir 2, the pressure at which one of the valves, 32, opens, being adjustable by means 34 from outside the shock absorber. The valve 15 has a conical head which seats by the action of a tension spring 20 to control liquid flow from above the piston, - through ports 19 and an annular space 18 to below the piston. The loading of the spring 20 is adjustable by the action of a screw 22 the head 22a of which is accessible by means of slot 10a in the attachment eye 10. The base valve comprises a flap valve 27 held in position over an aperture in a plate 25 by a washer 9. The plate 25 and washer 9 are both retained in position by a plate 26 secured by a screw 24. A bore through the screw 24 connects the cylinder 1 via a spring-loaded flap valve 32 with a duct 30, each end of which opens into the reservoir 2. The loading spring 33 of the valve 32 is adjustable by means of a screw 34. The reservoir 2 is vented to atmosphere at 11. A coiled rubber pipe may be joined to the connection 11 in order to prevent the ingress of dirt to the reservoir. In operation, on compression, liquid passes up through the piston via a conventional flap valve 13, and liquid is displaced to the reservoir via the adjustable valve 32. On rebound, liquid passes back from the reservoir to the cylinder via the valve 27 and through a peripheral series of ports (not shown) in the plate 26. Liquid also passes from above to below the piston via the adjustable valve 15.
