Abstract

613,960. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. GIRLING, Ltd., and DOUGLAS, P. May 11, 1946, No. 14302. [Class 108 (iii)] In a hydraulic damper or shock-absorber of the type in which the relatively movable members comprises a cylinder (not shown), and a piston-rod 10 carrying a piston 11, flow through which is controlled by a valve loaded to a predetermined pressure, the valve comprises a body member 20 having a reduced spigot part 21 at one end adapted to be screwed into an axial bore in the piston-rod and having an axial recess 23 at the other end in which is mounted a valve head 27 adapted to be held in engagement with a seating at the inner end of the recess by a compression spring 30 abutting between the valve head and an abutment 31 screwed into the outer end of the recess. In the construction shown, a ported piston valve 27 is slidable in an axial bore 24 in the valve body, which communicates with the cylinder by an axial bore 25 and ports 26 in the piston-rod. The valve 27 has a radiallyextending flange 29 which is pressed on to a seating formed by the inner end of the recess 23 by a spring 30 which bears on a ring 31 threadedly mounted in the outer end of the recess 23. The loading of the spring 30 may be adjusted by rotating the ring 31 which may be suitably locked in position. The piston comprises a hollow shell 11 having an end flange 33 which is apertured to pass over the spigot portion 21 by which the piston is secured to the piston-rod 10. A resilient discvalve 35 and champhered washer 36 are clamped between the flange 33 and piston-rod and control flow through ports 34 in the flange 33. The ring 31 may be in the form of a solid disc, flow into the recess 23 then taking place through ports 32. The cylinder is surrounded by a reservoir cylinder (not shown) both cylinders being closed at each end by respective closure members, one of which is glanded for passage of the piston-rod 10 and the other of which embodies a valve controlling flow between the cylinder and the reservoir.
