681,650. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. FERRAROTTI, G., and GUASSO, F. Jan. 15, 1951 [Sept. 19, 1950], No. 1124/51. Class 108 (iii). An hydraulic shock-absorber comprises a cylinder 1 incompletely filled with oil, and a piston 2 having flow ports 27 normally closed by an automatically - operating valve, which is formed by a cylindrical rubber block 30 carried on a bush 34 disposed on the piston rod, between the piston 2 and a valve disc 35, the bush 34 providing means by which the pressure exerted by the valve disc 35 against the block 30 may be varied. Suitable selection of the length of the bush 34 thus determines the desired damping effect of the shock absorber. In operation, on compression at a low velocity, liquid passes from the ports 27, into ports 31 in the rubber block 30, and through orifices 36 in the plate 35. At greater velocities, the pressure developed in a recess 32 in the upper face of the rubber block 30 enables liquid to escape through the peripheral joint between the rubber block 30 and the plate 35.
