Abstract

676,521. Hydraulic shock absorbers. McINTYRE, B. D., McINTYRE, W. D., and McINTYRE, C. S., (trading as PATENT DEVELOPMENT CO.). March 1, 1949 [Nov. 8, 1948], No. 5605/49. Class 108(iii) The invention relates to direct acting shock-absorbers having a pressure cylinder 21, a reserve chamber 19, compression valve means to control flow from the pressure cylinder 21 to the reserve chamber 19 and valve means to control flow of fluid from one side to the other of the piston 51. According to the invention, either or both valve means comprises an integral body part having fluid flow passage means therethrough and an associated movable valve means, the arrangement being such that at low velocities the fluid is controlled by the opening of the movable valve means, while at high velocities the control is provided by resistance to fluid flow through the passage means. The piston has a circumferential series of ports 59, flow through which on compression is controlled by a disc valve 67 loaded by a star-shaped spring 71. The disc valve 67 has limited travel on the boss of a flanged supportwasher 57 which is clamped between the bottom of a recess in the piston face and a shoulder on the piston rod. A diametrically-opposed pair of ports 61, disposed at lesser radius than the ports 59, have a predetermined bore so as to offer substantial resistance to flow at high piston speeds, but small resistance at low piston speeds. A laminated disc valve 79 provides resistance at low speeds and is held against the piston body by a nut 73. The compression valve comprises a further laminated disc valve 97, which provides resistance to flow at low velocity, from the cylinder 21 to the reserve chamber 19, through a single port 91. The diameter of the port 91 is such as to provide high resistance at greater velocity of flow. Flow from the reserve chamber to the cylinder is controlled by a valve 101 similar to the valve 67. The latter, its spring 103, and the valve 97 are retained by a rivet-like member 96 in relation to a compression valve body 45. Comparative, data is given in respect of the oerformance of a conventional shock-absorber and one according to the invention.
