Abstract
244,332. Rasetti, F. Jan. 24, 1925, [Convention date]. Fluid-friction vibrationdampers.-Relates to a fluid dash-pot of the type in which two pistons in a cylinder are connected by a piston rod which passes through a hole in a fixed diaphragm, fluid passing from one side of the diaphragm to the other through an aperture therein. The two pistons 7, Fig. 1, are mounted on a piston rod 5 connected to a bracket 15 on the axle of the vehicle while the cylinder 1 is mounted by a balljointed connection on a bracket 14 on the vehicle frame. The whole volume of liquid available for damping oscillation is contained between the two pistons. The piston rod 5 fits a hole in the diaphragm 4, the flow of liquid being regulated by grooves 5<11> of variable area. To avoid shocks when excessively rapid movement occurs, one of the pistons is slidable on the piston rod and is pressed into position against a shoulder by a spring 12. In a modification, the pistons are fixed on the rod and the cylinder is movable, under the control of a spring, in its spherical support. The piston rod and hole may be of square or other polygonal form with chamfered edges; or .the piston rod may be conical.
