Abstract

342,935. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. ARMSTRONG, F. G. G., 14, York Road, Beverley, East Yorkshire. March 11, 1930, No. 7850. [Class 108 (iii).] In an hydraulic shock-absorber for vehicles, cooperating elements such as a cylinder and piston are respectively connected to two pivoted arms mounted one on the frame and the other on the axle, the connection between one of the co-operating elements and its arm including flexible means. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the two arms 10, 11 are connected respectively to the frame and axle at their ends 12, 13, and the arm 11 has rigidly secured to it a plunger 15 which works in a cylinder 16 enclosed in a reservoir 17 connected to the other arm 10 by a flexible member 29 passing over a curved guide 28 on the arm. When the plunger 15 moves outwardly, liquid flows freely from the reservoir into the cylinder 16 through a one-way valve 20 which works on an extension of the rivet 18 connecting the cylinder 16 to the reservoir. Inward movement of the plunger is resisted by the flow of the liquid out of the cylinder through a restricted orifice controlled by the adjusting screw 23. In a modification the cylinder, reservoir, and piston are arranged on the other side of the pivot 14 connecting the two arms 10, 11. Several constructions are described, one being shown in Fig. 4, in which pistons 35 arranged on opposite sides of a pivot 39 work in cylinders 33 mounted on the frame of the vehicle, the pistons being connected by a flexible member 37 to a sector which is oscillated by an arm 38 connected at 41 to the vehicle axle.
