Abstract

367,995. Vehicle suspensions ; shockabsorbers. ROVER CO., Ltd. and SEARLE, F., Meteor Works, Coventry. Jan. 17, 1931, No. 1595. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii).] In a steering wheel mounting for a motor vehicle, the steering pivot pin is slidable vertically in a bracket fixed to the vehicle frame and its movement is controlled by helical tension or compression springs and an oil damping arrangement. In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the stub axle d carries the wheel by a ball bearing and a plain bearing and is fixed to the steering pivot c which oscillates for steering and is slidably vertically in a bracket b secured to the end of a transverse frame member a. The lower end of the pivot c forms a piston and also a movable abutment for one end of the main compression spring g. A light rebound spring j may also be provided. Small passages c<2> in the piston restrict the flow of oil contained in the casing b and restrain vertical movement of the pivot pin c. In the modification, Fig. 1, the compression spring is replaced by two tension springs g in front of and behind the swivelling axis and which exert a self-centring effect when the steering wheel is deflected from the straight-ahead position. The pin c is hollow and at one end of its stroke engages with small clearance a projection b<2> on the cap b<1> thereby throttling the oil and checking rebound.
