Abstract

976,390. Hydro-pneumatic shock-absorbers. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. Jan. 26, 1962 [Feb. 11, 1961], No. 3081/62. Heading F2S. In a piston and cylinder vibration damper 1, 2 having an annular compensating chamber 10 surrounding the working cylinder 1 and several resilient pressure cushions 12 arranged in the compensating chamber, each pressure cushion consists of an air, or gas-filled, flexible tube which extends approximately over the full length of the cylinder 1. Oil, displaced by a piston rod 3 as it enters the cylinder 1, passes through bores 8 in a valve ring 7, past a cup-valve 6, and through a number of bores 9 in the cylinder 1 into the compensating chamber 10 which is located between the cylinder 1 and an outer casing 11. Four pressure cushions 12, circumferentially spaced around the compensating chamber 10, each consist of a gasfilled flexible tube which is completely closed. During a rebound stroke a valve 4 in the piston 2 closes and hydraulic liquid is urged out of the space 5 above the piston 2 and past the valve 6 into the compensating chamber 10, fluid from the lower end of which flows through orifices 15 and a non-return base valve 17 into the cylinder 1 below the piston 2. The tension of the cup valve 6 can be regulated by turning the valve ring 7 when the damper is fully extended so that lugs on a plate 14 mounted on the piston can be engaged in corresponding slots 13 in the valve ring 7.
