Abstract

533,190. Pneumatic springs. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI. Oct. 16, 1939, No. 27985. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1938. [Class 108 (iii)] The resilient suspension for vehicles described in Specification 524,287 comprising in combination one or more pneumatic springs and one or more rubber springs so arranged that the rubber springs only come into play in the action of the system when the load sustained therein commences to exceed a given predetermined value, is modified so that the deformability and resilience of the suspension under load are adjustable during its functioning. In the preferred construction of the earlier specification wherein the rubber spring 2 is arranged within the pneumatic spring 1 comprising a bellows 5 closed by plates 3 and 4 which are affixed respectively to the suspended and the non-suspended parts of the vehicle, the pneumatic spring is connected to auxiliary reservoirs for the operating fluid of the spring by pipes 12, 14 provided with manually or automatically actuated valves 13, 15. The adjustability of the suspension is effected by opening or closing a valve thus softening the action of the springs or rendering them more resilient by the confined air respectively. In application to the landing wheels of a plane, the initial shock of landing is absorbed by closing the valve and the subsequent rolling load of the machine until it comes to rest is absorbed by thereafter opening the valve. Instead of connecting the pneumatic spring to a reservoir for the operating fluid at the point of change-over the rubber spring may be connected to atmosphere, the rubber spring taking the whole of the load. Two or more reservoirs of different operating fluid pressures may be used to allow the deformability and resilience of the suspension to be progressively regulated. The rubber spring may be constructed as described in Specification 440,925.
