Abstract

821,230. Hydro-pneumatic shock absorbers. MILLY, L. C. E. Jan. 9, 1956, No. 647/56. Class 108(3) In Fig. 2, a liquid reservoir 11 surrounding a shock absorber cylinder 8, is separated by a filter 19 from the interior of a bellows 21. The latter is maintained at a predetermined air pressure through a valve 29 A suspension spring 22 may be disposed outside (as shown) or inside the bellows 21. Flow of liquid in the reservoir 11 is controlled by a floating piston 12 having a valve 17 and operating in conjunction with a spring 13. The extremes of movement of the shock absorber piston 32 are cushioned by rubber blocks 30, 31. Compression is also cushioned by interengagement of projections 27 on the bellows In a simpler construction (Fig. 1, not shown), the filter 19 spring 13, and piston 12 are dispensed with. The piston 32 may be so ground as to have a slightly oval shape, and is phosphatized. In Fig. 3, a reservoir 36 deals with liquid changes due to normal intensity deflections of the piston rod 20. Liquid movements due to more violent deflections of the piston rod 20 are accommodated by a second reservoir 38, flow into which is controlled by a valve 39 loaded by a spring 40. Return flow is controlled by a valve 42. In this construction, the air chamber is formed by a flexible member 43 clamped at one end to the shock absorber cylinder, and at the other end to the plate 45 rigid with the piston rod. This chamber is pressurized through a valve 29 but has no means of communication with the liquid containing chambers of the shock absorber. The pressure in the air chamber in each case may be indicated by means of an electrical pressure gauge and may be connected with an external source of air pressure which may be formed by a vehicle spare wheel. The air chamber of one shock absorber may be connected to that of another shock absorber. French Specifications 1,022,216 and 1,034,713 are referred to.
