888,908. Height regulating fluid spring devices. SOC. APPLICAZIONI GOMMA ANTIVIBRANTI S.p.A. Oct. 14, 1959 [Oct. 18, 1958], No. 34801/59. Class 108(3). A vehicle springing and height regulating means comprises a tubular bellows-shaped springing means 1 between sprung and unsprung members 3 and 4 defining a main chamber 6 within which is a second tubular bellows-shaped springing means 2 attached to one of the members at one end and closed by a plate 5 at its other end and a valved passage 7 for supply and control of pressure fluid to the main chamber 6. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 the inner chamber is vented to atmosphere to give a soft suspension and the main chamber 6 is liquid filled. The distance between sprung and unsprung members and hence the vehicle height is kept constant by varying the fluid pressure in the main chamber through valve 13 which is controlled by linkage 14, 15 and allows fluid flow into and from the main chamber 6 through passage 7. The two springing means may be of similar rubber-metal construction; the outer has helical ridges 9, 10 on the inner and outer surfaces of the walls, the two ridges being of arcuate convex form and displaced by half a pitch from one another. A helical metal spring is incorporated within the ridges on the inner surface. Passage 8 may have a damping function or be closed when the inner chamber will act as an air spring for use in heavy vehicles. U.S.A. Specification 2,670,201 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 734,549 and 781,896.
