Abstract
A combined spring and shock absorber for a vehicle suspension system consists of a cylinder containing oil and sealed with end caps. A piston has rods projecting from each end which pass through sliding bearings and seals. The piston rods are of different diameters so that a greater force is needed to force the oil from the larger lower chamber to the smaller upper chamber than is the case when the oil flows in the opposite direction. The volume of oil in the cylinder is sufficient to provide the required degree of elasticity.
