Abstract

1,092,341. Hydraulic shock absorbers. GIRL. ING Ltd. June 10, 1964 [March 15. 1963], No. 10429/63. Heading F2S. An hydraulic shock absorber comprising a piston and cylinder assembly 15, 10 is provided with a piston by-pass 18, 19 through which, in normal reciprocations of the piston, liquid passes freely from one end of the cylinder to the other. An inertia mass 20 is mounted in the shock-absorber assembly such that, on sudden shock, the mass actuates a valve means which at best partly restricts the by-pass. The mass is spring-loaded into its equilibrium position by a single spring 21 or two springs are mounted at each end of the mass. The by-pass may be constituted by a passage through the piston-rod, the mass being slidably mounted about the piston-rod. The valve means may comprise a rotary valve 25 which is attached, through an arm 27 to the inertia mass 26<SP>1</SP>. The by-pass consists of two flexible pipes 30 and the rotary valve, the valve being mounted on the frame 11 of a vehicle. The valve is spring-loaded by means of a rubber bush through which the spindle of the valve passes. The housing of the valve may be mounted on the shock-absorber cylinder (Fig. 2, not shown). Two rotary valves may be mounted in series (Fig. 5, not shown) or parallel, the arms of the inertia masses having different lengths and the inertia masses being of different mass. The inertia mass may form part of a reciprocating valve member (Fig. 4, not shown).
