Abstract

A shock absorber comprises a piston 2 working in a cylindrical body 1 between two resilient masses 3, 4. The piston 2 is formed by a washer 6 fixed to the lower end of the piston rod 7 and a further washer 5 slidable on the rod 7, a mass 8 of deformable material being interposed between the washers. A sleeve 11 is adjustably positioned about the rod 7 such that a desired pro-compression may be applied to the mass 8 to force the peripheral wall of the mass against the internal wall of the body 1 and introduce friction damping. A space 41 may be left between-the piston 2 and one of the resilient masses. The piston may be lubricated by fabricating the mass 8 of a suitable lubricated material, e.g. graphitized rubber or alternate graphite and rubber washers or by lubricating the walls of the cylinder.
