Abstract

607,673. Liquid springs. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and BINGHAM, A. E. March 25, 1946, No. 9184. [Class 108 (iii)] In a telescopic resilient device and damper of the kind in which liquid is resiliently compressed by entry of a plunger into a cylinder, damping being afforded by a piston-head on the plunger which partitions the cylinder into two axially-spaced compartments connected by a restricted passage, the pistonhead is mounted with freedom for limited axial travel with respect to the plunger. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the pistonhead 4 has a bore 4a by which it is slidably mounted on the inner end of the shock absorber plunger 5. The latter has a reduced neck portion 5a, defining enclosed liquid spaces 7, 8 on either side of a partition 4b in the bore 4a which are connected by damping passages 9, 10, 11 adjustable on assembly by a needle valve 12. The passages 10, 11 are slightly spaced from the ends of the neck 5a to provide cushioning of extreme movement of the damping head in either direction. In a simpler construction (Fig. 1, not shown), damping is provided at each extreme only, of damping- head movement. The damping head is in the form of a plain piston slidably mounted on a reduced neck-portion at the inner end of the plunger. The piston has open-ended recesses on either side face, respectively engaging with slight clearance at each extreme of movement, the shouldered end of the plunger where it joins the neck portion and a nut or enlargement mounted on the outer end of the plunger. In a third construction (Fig. 3, not shown), the damping head is in the form of a hollow piston having a reduced-diameter skirt the outer end of which is closed by a screw plug. The interior piston-space so formed is divided into two annular liquid-containing chambers by a piston mounted on the plunger. Each chamber is connected by a respective damping passage with the main cylinder so that on axial movement of the damping head liquid from the main cylinder is pumped by the plunger piston, into and out from, the chambers.
