Abstract
1,155,838. Universal movement dampers. METALASTIK Ltd. 4 Nov., 1966 [20 Nov., 1965], No. 49413/65. Heading F2S. In a universal movement damper a member 34 or 35, Fig. 2, made of rigid material, e.g. plastics, has its ball end 30, or 31 tightly fitted into a cylindrical rubber part 32 so as to form a bulge, such as 20 or 21, Fig. 1, in the wall of the part 32 the ball end 30 or 31 being universally movable and slidable to-and-fro in the cylindrical rubber part 32 so that damping work is done by sliding friction and internal hysteresis of the rubber. As shown in Fig. 1 the rubber parts 10, 11, which may differ in thickness of material and size with corresponding changes in the sizes of the ball ends 16, 17 of a dumbbell member 15, may be reinforced with woven, or braided, sleeves applied externally or, imbedded in the rubber. The ball ends 16, 17 may be corrugated or, provided with raised formations. The fitting for the cylindrical lower end of the rubber part 11 comprises a mushroom formation 24 with an air relief opening 27 and a spring clip 26, an end wall 22 of the upper part being secured by a rivet 14 having an air bore 18. As shown in Fig. 2 the ball end parts 30, 31 are mounted on relatively movable parts 13, 12 and co-operate with the single rubber sleeve 32. The ball ends may be corrugated &c., and fluted to prevent the build up of air pressure within the tube 32. The final approach of the members is cushioned by the compression of the meeting ends of the parts 10, 11, Fig. 1 and, in the embodiment of Fig. 2, by the compression of the ends of the sleeve 32, with the flange mountings of the members 34, 35. Lubrication of the rubber parts reduces the damping factor. Rubber buffering noses (40), Fig. 3 not shown, may be formed on the ball ends (16, 17) and buffering tips (41) reinforced with backing rings (42), limit the extension of the damper. In the arrangement of Fig. 1 buffering at the end of a contraction stroke may be attained by providing the parts 10, 11 with rubber end walls. In a modification of the embodiment of Fig. 2 extension of the damper is limited by part spherical ferrules on the ends of the cylindrical part 32. In a further modification a damper, as shown in Fig. 2, is mounted within a hollow, frustoconical, rubber spring and, in a still further arrangement, such a damper is incorporated in spring having two U-shaped metal members arranged one within the other with one inverted with respect to the other and having pads of rubber bonded between their overlapping vertical limbs.
