Abstract

1,029,675. Vibration dampers. GEORGE RICHARDS & CO. Ltd. Nov. 22, 1963 [Aug. 23, 1962], No. 32497/62. Heading F2S. An inertia-type damper for suppressing vibrations in machine tool parts such as a boring bar 1 comprises a heavy cylindrical mass 3 which is accommodated, with appreciable clearance, within a cylindrical recess 2 close to the unsupported end of the bar 1 and which is coupled thereto by a pair of high-hysteresis elastomeric rings 9A, 9B compressed respectively between shoulders 5A, 5B formed in the ends of the mass 5 and corresponding end washers 8A, 8B. The latter are held in place by a bolt 7 which passes freely through the washer 8B and threadedly engages the washer 8A so that the compression of the rings 9A, 9B can be adjusted to tune the damper to the desired resonant frequency. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, the inertia mass is in the form of a cylindrical sleeve which is clamped, at its ends, through the intermediary of elastomer rings to a reduced spigot on the end of the boring bar 13. The Specification also describes a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), whereby the adjustment of the bolt 7 in a damper of the kind shown in Fig. 1 is effected by means of a small, remotely controlled, electric motor and reduction gear unit housed within a deep recess in one end of the inertia mass. The resilient rings may each be replaced by a series of circumferentially-abutting balls.
