Abstract
1,032,232. Boring-bars; machine-tool details. KENNAMETAL Inc. March 14, 1963 [April 17, 1962], No. 10142/63. Headings B3B and B3C. [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for damping transverse vibrations of a hollow member 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises discs 10 freely movable radially in the bore 7 of the member so that the vibrations are opposed by radial impact of the discs. The tungsten-nickel-copper alloy annular discs 10 which may have different diameters, are loosely mounted on a rod 12, between an end plate 13 and a spring 14. The assembly is retained with limited endwise movement in the tungstencarbide boring-bar 1 by a sleeve 17 fixed in the bore by a ring 19, which is expanded against the bore-wall by a collar operated by a nut 21. Instead of mounting annular discs on a rod, imperforate discs may be used, retained in the bore by a spring. As applied to damping a workpiece 30 being turned between centres 31, Fig. 3 (not shown), caps 33, 34, 37, 39 are provided for the ends of the disc-retaining rod 38. A tubular member 50, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), adapts the damper for use with work 53 of larger bore-size. The member 50 has radial ribs 54 clamped against the bore-wall by a leveroperated cam 56.
