Abstract

The vibration damping mechanism is applied to machine tools treating relatively large pieces e.g. a vertical lathe (1), and is designed to reduce tool (4) chatter and vibration. The tool (4) is mounted on the foot of a vertical slidable cantilever arm (5) which passes through a slide (6) traversing a rail (7). The arm (6) also cantilevers a significant distance above the slide, and the top extremity (9) has weighted blocks (8) which are free to oscillate on elastic mountings. When the tool (4) is offset the greatest distance from the slide (6) the offset of the weights (8) may equal 60% of the tool offset. Block (8) combinations may be utilised, a certain number of blocks being capable of oscillation in directions parallel to tool travel, and the remainder being capable of oscillation in normal directions.
