Abstract

1320531 Vibration damping; boring bars; lathe tools NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 22 Oct 1971 [10 Sept 1970] 43421/70 Headings B3B, B3C and B3T [Also in Division F2] Vibrations of a boring bar 1 or lathe tool (not shown) are damped to an adjustable extent by the impacts of a mass 23 resiliently connected (by rod 25) to the member 1 on a target 13 provided by or rigidly connected to the member 1 and partly surrounding the mass. The impacting surfaces of the mass 23 and the target 13 are frusto-conical. The damping is varied by adjusting the free length of the rod 25 and the width of the gap "d" between the mass 23 and the target 13. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the mass (85) carries adjustable weights.
