Abstract

745,843. Coiled springs; hydraulic shock absorbers. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO., Ltd., and CHAMBERS, H. D. June 15, 1954 [July 7, 1953], No. 18752/53. Class 108 (3). A damping unit for a motor-cycle rear wheel suspension, includes a coiled spring 7 (Fig. 2) disposed coaxial with, and at least in part between, inner and outer cylindrical members 6, 8, a first means (not shown) for fixing a first point on the spring with respect to the member 8, and a second means for fixing any second point, located on a particular length of the spring, with respect to the inner member 6. In Fig. 2, the cylinder 6 constitutes the outer casing of a hydraulic shock absorber, and is formed with a helical thread 5 which engages an internal thread on the inner wall 4b of a double-walled sleeve. An external thread on the wall 4b forms a seat for the lower end of a coiled suspension spring 7. The upper end of the spring 7 is secured to the piston rod and the member 8 in the form of a dust cap. In Fig. 3, the spring 7 seats in a threaded sleeve 9, which also engages a threaded collar 10 rigid with the cylinder 6. A spring-urged ball 12 is adapted to engage one of a series of holes in the sleeve 9. By rotating the sleeves 4 and 9 in Figs. 2 and 3 respectively, the effective turns of the spring 4 are varied in each case. According to the Provisional Specification, the spring may be subjected to either compression or tension, due to the arrangement being such that the distance between the seatings at each end of the spring remains constant.
