Abstract

778,281. Hydraulic shock absorbers. STURARI, C. Jan. 14, 1953 [Jan. 15, 1952 ; April 3, 1952], No. 1094/53. Class 108(3). An hydraulic shock absorber comprises an annular reservoir 76 defined by an inner working cylinder 16 and an outer cylinder 55, conduit means 78, 75, 82, 84, 85 connecting the reservoir 76 and one end of the cylinder 55, end members 12, 54 closing the cylinder 55 and each holding in a respective cushion member 74, 52. In Fig. 2, closure members 50, 68, for each end of the working cylinder 16, are secured in position by the clamping action of the end members 12, 54, of the cylinder 55. The cushion members 52 and 74 have the effect of cushioning a sudden axial or lateral load applied to the shock absorber. Liquid which leaks past the closure 50, drains via passages 64 to an annular space within the reservoir 76 defined by a cylindrical diaphragm 66. The reservoir 76 is connected with the lower chamber 19 of the two working cylinder chambers 18, 19, defined by the piston 15, by orifices 78 in the diaphragm 66, passages 75, and a base valve 70. The base valve 70 is by-passed by a valve 80, the spring-loading of which is adjustable at 88. Flow between chambers 18 and 19 is provided by ports 20 controlled by a valve 22, and an axial passage 24, 26, controlled by a valve 32. The valve 32 is by-passed by a metering passage 37 in a rod 34. The rod 34 is axially adjustable from outside the shock absorber by rotation of a plug 46, to vary the effect of the metering passage 37. The valve 32 is loaded by a spring 35. A stronger spring 38 acts on a stop 36 rigid with an extension 33 of the rod 34. The shock absorber is charged with liquid through a valve 95 to a level determined by a tube 100 in the reservoir 76. Air is charged via a valve 104. The valve 22 may also be adjustable. In the modified construction shown in Fig. 4, the valve 80 has a central by-pass passage which is controlled by a metering pin 110, externally adjustable at 88. The passage 37 is replaced by a profiled section 37a of the rod 34. The resilient annular member 74 has a conical seating for the cylinder closure 68, and the member 52 has shoulders which cushion lateral shock between the piston rod and outer casing of the shock absorber. This construction may be used in a vertical or horizontal position. The rod 34 in either construction may be adjusted so as to render the shock absorber rigid against compression load. Specification 778,282 is referred to.
