Abstract

1,038,662. Hydro-pneumatic railway vehicle draw-gear. Z. O. KARAKASHJAN, A. I. TIMOSHUK, and F. S. MARKANOV. Feb. 15, 1963, No. 6300/63. Heading B7T. [Also in Division F2] Railway vehicle hydro-pneumatic draw gear comprises a cylinder 4 movable within a casing 1, a metering piston 3 fixed to the cylinder 4 and movable in an oil-filled chamber B, a pistonrod 7 slidably mounting the piston 3 and slidable itself within a fixed partition 8, a piston 5 floating in a low compression gas chamber A, a piston 6 floating in a high compression gas chamber C, and a safety valve 23 operative on sudden heavy impact. In operation, as the cylinders 1 and 4 telescope, oil flows from chamber B through holes 11, 12 and 14 in the piston 3 into chamber B 2 to move the floating piston 5, and into chamber B 1 to create an hydraulic seal in grooves 19. The cylinder 4 and piston 3 then move further and abut the shoulder on the rod 7 and move the piston 6 into the chamber C against the high pressure of gas therein. The shoulder on the rod covers the slots 12, see also Fig. 2 (not shown), and increases the hydraulic resistance. The compressed gases in the chambers A and C effect recoil, and the fluid flows back from chambers B 1 and B 2 into chamber B. As the fluid returns it presses a loose ring 15, Fig. 3, against the flange 13 on the piston 3, and as the slots 12 are closed off by the shoulder on the rod 7 for part of the recoil action, then the recoil takes place against resistance and is consequently smooth. A piston 28 having an extreme outward position limited by a bolt 29 acts against oil in chamber D to provide an hydraulic seal in grooves 31.
