Abstract

359,203. Fluid pressure brakes; shoes acting on drums. HALL, F. H., Cleeve Cottage, Holford, near Bridgwater, Somerset. Oct. 20, 1930, No. 31364. [Class 103 (i).] Brake shoes 3 are applied to the drum 2 by a downwardly moving fluid-pressure operated piston 12 disposed within the brake-drum and acting on toggle-links 17,18 connected to the shoes. The shoes may also be applied mechanically by a hand-lever connected to a lever 26 carrying a cam 25 engaging the link 18. The piston rod 14 has a coned end 16 engaging the boss of the link 18. The initial angle of the links 17, 18 may be adjusted to obtain varying leverages by providing a series of pivot holes 27 in the brake shoes for the connection of the links. The cylinder 1 is a casting provided with a plate 4 for attachment to the fixed anchor plate 6 of the brake and has a rearward extension 7 formed with a supply pipe connection 8 connected by passage 9 to the upper end of the cylinder. A bleed passage 10 for letting out air in the case of a hydraulic brake is closed by a plug 11. To prevent oil that may leak past the piston from getting upon the brake shoes, the inner surface of the closure plate 15 of the cylinder is slightly conical and a passage 24 leads from above it to the exterior of the brake drum.
