Abstract

540,921. Fluid-pressure brakes. BELL, W. T., and CROMPTON, A. June 3, 1940, No. 9694. [Class 103 (i)] Mechanical brake systems for winding engines &c. have the brake lever 2 unweighted and normally actuated by a doubleacting pressure-operated device, such as a brake-engine 4, with a piston 5 working in a closed cylinder, which is directly connected at the upper end to a pressure medium supply and connected at the lower end through a control valve 8 to the same pressure medium supply. The direct pressure medium supply acts on the piston 5 in the "brakes on" direction and the pressure applied, when it is desired to release the brakes, through the control valve 8 acts in the opposite direction and is effective to lift the piston 5 to the "brakes off" position against the pressure direct from the supply by reason of acting on the lower and larger side of the piston 5. Means are also provided to apply the brakes upon failure of the pressure supply; for example a weighted lever 18 pivoted on the brakeoperating shaft 3 is connected through a lost-motion device 20 to the brake lever 2 and is normally kept raised by a connection to a piston 22 in a cylinder 21 connected to the pressure supply through a pipe 23 containing a sliding valve 25, which is held in the position shown to maintain the pressure in cylinder 21 by means of a piston 27 in a cylinder 28 connected to the pressure supply through a bye-pass 30, a one-way bye-pass pipe 31 being arranged to maintain the pressure in cylinder 21 against sudden demands for pressure arising from rapid action of the brake-engine 4. A pressure failure switch 33 connected in the pressure supply pipe 15 actuates emergency mechanism connected to the control plunger 13 to open the brake engine to exhaust. The piston 5 of the brake-engine is mechanically connected by a link system 16 to the plunger 13 in order to allow leakage past the brake-engine piston to escape to exhaust.
