Abstract

633,129. Fluid-pressure-operated brakes. BELL, W. T., and CROMPTON, A. May 27, 1946, No. 15968. [Class 103 (i)] In a brake such as described in Specification 540,921, the accumulator is so constructed and arranged that it serves both to supply the pressure-fluid for the normal operation of the brake and also to apply the brake if the pressurefluid supply fails, a separate brake engine for this latter purpose thus being rendered unnecessary. Normal operation of the brake is effected by a brake engine 4 through a lever 2, pivoted at 3, the piston 5 on its upper face being constantly under the pressure in the accumulator 14 through pipes 6, 15 and on its underface normally to that pressure through the pipe 12, control valve 8 and pipe 15a, so that the brake is released. The brake is applied by the pressure acting on the upper face of the piston by operating the valve 8 to connect the lower chamber of the brake engine to exhaust passage 17. A "follow-up" mechanism 16 for the valve ensures that the lower chamber is connected to exhaust when the operator's lever is in the " brakes on" position to prevent leakage past the piston 5 from releasing the brake. The accumulator comprises a ram 18 to which weights 19 are connected. The weights have a pin-and-slot connection 2a with the lever 2 whereby in the event of failure of the pressure fluid supply the descent of the weights is sufficient to engage them with the lever and thus to apply the brake.
