Abstract
721,370. Electrically - actuated valves. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 24, 1953 [March 6, 1952], No. 5905/52. Class 135. A piston valve for hydraulic systems is actuated by an electromagnet S against a fluid - pressure biasing force, and a space into which the pressure medium is admitted for producing the biasing force or a force partly balancing the biasing force is separated from the space into which the controlled medium is admitted. As shown, high and low pressure fluid is supplied to the valve by conduits A, D respectively and the outlet B is connected to one of those supplies according to the position of the piston. The biasing force is derived from the conduit A and acts on the upper end E of the piston whilst a force partly balancing the biasing force acts on an extension at the lower end H. In a modification, the lower extension of the piston is omitted and the biasing force acts on an upper portion of the piston intermediate in diameter between the control lands and the spindle and working in a cylinder which is separate from the space into which the controlled medium is admitted.
