Abstract

687,658. Vacuum servo-brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. June 27, 1950 [June 27, 1949], No. 16990/49. Class 103 (i). A servo-braking device of the type wherein the hydraulic pressure exerted by a master cylinder 2 and capable of acting directly through pipe 3, cylinders 4 and 9 and pipe 5 upon the brake cylinders, is proportionately amplified by vacuum operating in a cylinder 20 on a piston 19, is characterized in that the vacuum force applied is raised in accordance with the hydraulic pressure exerted by means of a piston 27, in a cylinder branched off the hydraulic circuit, which acts upon a pivoted lever 29 to operate a valve controlling the degree of vacuum. A rod 31, pivoted to the free end of the lever 29, depends into a valve chamber 32 and is connected to a cylindrical valve casing 34 resiliently secured by a diaphragm 35 to the sides of the chamber. The vacuum cylinder 20 is normally connected to atmosphere by a passage 44, a passage through the base 37 of the valve casing and ports 36 and 33 in the top of the valve casing and chamber. When the lever 29 is lifted as a result of hydraulic pressure acting on the piston 27 the casing 34 is raised so that the ports in the base are first closed by engagement with a disc valve member 40 and communication between the cylinder 20 and a source of vacuum is established through passage 39.
