Abstract

576,609. Brakes. IRVING, J. S., and PRATT, J. H. Aug. 16, 1944, No. 15665. [Class 103 (i)] The shoes of brakes of wheels at each end of an axle are spread by a single hydraulic cylinder fixed on the axle or axle-casing, the piston being coupled to a lever coupled by tension members to the shoe-spreading means. As shown, the cylinder 14 is carried by a bracket which is clamped to the axle by bolts 13. A shaft 15 is keyed in bosses 16 on the bracket 10, and rotatably carries a lever assembly one arm 18 of which is connected to the piston rod at 19, the remaining arms 22 being opposed and connected by tension members 25 with the shoespreading means. Also carried on the shaft 15 for hand operation of the brakes, is a lever 29 the boss 28 of which has a lost motion dogclutch connection with the lever assembly. The lever 29 is operated from the hand lever by a cable 30, and the lost motion permits hydraulic actuation without affecting the hand operation means. If compensation between the brakes is required, the shaft 15 is mounted in a swinging bracket. In a modification, the cylinder is secured to a pad on the axle, and the lostmotion in the hand-operation means is provided by a pin on the free end of the lever 29 engaging a slot in a link which replaces the cable 30. According to the Provisional Specification, the cylinder may be slidably and swingably mounted on the axle, and two operating levers are provided, one connected to the piston and the other to the cylinder.
