Abstract

506,941. Brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and GATES, G. R. G. Feb. 22, 1938, No. 5635. [Class 103 (i)] Operating mechanism whereby a pair of vehicle wheel brakes of the kind in which a brake band or shoes is applied to a drum by a wedge or equivalent moved parallel to the wheel axis may be operated by alternative means for example, a hand lever or a pedal through mechanical and hydraulic connections respectively, comprises in one form a pair of levers 18 pivoted at 17 to a bracket 15 secured to a wheel axle and connected each by a rod 13 to one brake. The levers are horizontal and are disposed longitudinally of the vehicle and the rods are parallel to the axle. A hydraulic cylinder 22 secured to the bracket and connected to a pedal-operated master cylinder has piston rods 24 engaging the levers. A pair of links 32, 33 are also connected to the levers and the link 32 has a hand-lever connection 35. The brakes may thus be applied by the pedal or hand-lever with an equalized force and by reason of the means of engagement of the rods 24 with the levers and of the slot 34, without interference of one operating means with the other. Similar mechanism may be provided for both front and rear axles. In Fig. 4, the cylinder is slidably carried from the bracket 39 by a sleeve 40 and has a slotted lug 45 through which passes the pin 47 of a fork 46 on the end of one rod 13. The piston rod 43 is similarly connected to the other rod 13. The connections from the hand lever comprise a cable 53 connected to one lever 5 and passing around a pulley on the other, the levers engaging the pins 47. Specification 495,834 is referred to.
