Abstract

461,745. Vehicle brakes. BEUSCH, C. Aug. 19, 1935, No. 23251. [Class 103 (i)] In a brake system for vehicles in which one back wheel only is primarily braked, the braking effect of this wheel is transmitted to the brakes on the other three wheels by a transmission system arranged so that the braking effect on the other three wheels is less than that on the one back wheel in order to avoid locking of the three secondary wheels if the primary wheel locks. The shoes 11 of the brake of the primarily braked rear wheel are mounted on a lever 13 which can rock to a limited extent to transmit the turning effort of this wheel by hydraulic transmission 17 to the brakes 23 on the other three wheels. The turning moment imparted to the lever 13 by the shoes 11 has a smaller arm than the moment produced by the reaction at the piston 15 so that this arrangement produces a " stepdown " in the transmission of the braking force from the primarily to the secondarily braked wheels. The ratio of the cross-section of the pistons at the primarily and secondarily braked wheels may be varied for this purpose. The shoes 11 may be operated by another hydraulic cylinder in addition to cylinder 9 operated by pedal 1, this additional cylinder being operated by a servomotor and being supplied with fluid from the conduit 17.
