In an hydraulic brake system for vehicles, the direct hydraulic transmission between the brake pedal and the wheel brake cylinders is interrupted by the insertion of a mechanical transmission means and a secondary hydraulically operated brake which is engageable with a port driven in accordance with the motion of the vehicle and which is connected in parallel or shunt with the direct transmission comprise a movable brake member which, during a braking operation, is made active by hydraulic pressure so as to become operative on the inserted mechanical transmission means for intensifying the braking action. In the embodiment illustrated, when pressure is applied to the brake pedal 10 the brake cylinders at the wheel brakes (not shown) are operated directly through the combined hydraulic and mechanical transmission 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 19 and a disc brake 23 forming a secondary brake is simultaneously operated through the shunt hydraulic circuit 24. During travel of the vehicle in the forward direction the brake disc 22 rotates in the direction of the arrow and drives the caliper housing 28 of the disc brake in the direction of rotation about its pivot 26 in an anti-clockwise direction. An additional force in the direction of brake operation is thereby exerted on the rod 15 according to the lever ratio and the brake cylinders at the road wheels thus receive a higher pressure than would be possible with direct transmission alone. The disc brake 23 not only serves for the purpose of brake intensification at the road wheels but it also increases the total braking surface of the vehicle braking system. A hand brake arrangement may be provided to operate on the brake disc 22 through another caliper housing 29.
