Abstract

1382507 Spring-applied brakes BRITISH LEYLAND TRUCK & BUS DIVISION Ltd 6 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 18762/72 Heading F2F In a spring-applied, fluid-pressure-released vehicle brake actuator a piston 5 biased in the actuating direction by a spring 9 is connected to an hydraulic cylinder 2 in which is located a service brake piston 1 connected to an output rod 3. During normal service operation hydraulic fluid passes through an inlet 4 to move piston 1 to apply rod 3, piston 5 being held against the action of spring 9 by fluid passed through a port 8. For parking, fluid is exhausted via port 8 allowing spring 9 to move piston 5 and cylinder 2 rightwardly, a shoulder 2a on cylinder 2 engaging the piston 1 to move it, and hence rod 3, to apply the vehicle brake. If the service and parking brake are applid simultaneously rod 3 is moved rightwardly by a force equal to that applied by spring 9 or hydraulic fluid in cylinder 2 whichever is the greater.
