Abstract

1290784 Dual braking systems AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO Ltd 29 Dec 1970 [16 Jan 1970] 2254/70 Headings F2E and F2F In a dual fluid pressure braking system having brakes of the two-leading shoe type and two separate fluid pressure systems, one fluid pressure system actuates wheel cylinders 12 of each front brake 10 and wheel cylinders 15 of each rear brake 11 whilst the other actuates the other wheel cylinders 13 of each front brake 10 and motor cylinders actuating wedge expanders 16 of the rear wheel brakes 11, the motor cylinders also being spring applied and fluid pressure released for a parking application. For a service application fluid is passed to the brakes from two accumulators 21, 22 through a pedal operated valve 25. Adjacent each rear brake 11 is a manually controlled valve 46, Fig. 2 (not shown), having a piston (48), a land (54) of which permits communication between reservoirs 21, 22 and a motor chamber 33 during service application, pressure in chamber 33 causing actuation of a piston 35 and a wedge 36 which applies a thrust to plungers 29 connected to the brake shoe webs 30. At the same time a further land (53) communicates a motor chamber 34 with an accumulator 23, but when the valve (46) is moved into a parking position piston 48 is moved upwardly until land (54) isolates chamber 34 from accumulator 23 and connects it, together with chamber 33, to a reservoir 19 via valve 25. A piston 38 is thereby urged to apply the wedge 36 by means of Belleville washers 43 acting on a piston 44.
