Abstract

1,031,116. Hydraulically-operated disc brakes. F. J. C. HOPE. Nov. 25, 1963 [Nov. 30, 1962], No. 45542/62. Heading F2E and F2F. A disc brake for a wheeled vehicle includes a torque arm 2 pivotably mounted on a wheel axle 3, friction pads 5 housed in one or more calipers 1 mounted on the torque arm, an hydraulic system effective to move the friction pads into frictional contact with the brake disc and cam means 8, 9 operable hydraulically on pivotal movement of the torque arm 2 to increase the braking pressure exerted by the friction pads on the disc. The source of fluid pressure comprises two master cylinders 20, 21 operable by the driver of the vehicle such that the first master cylinder 20 causes the friction pads 5 to be applied through a restrictor valve 24 and the hydraulic connection 12 and subsequently the second master cylinder 21 is applied to cause the hydraulic pressure supply system to the brakes to be isolated from the first master cylinder 20 by means of the piston 25 controlling flow through the restrictor valve 24 so as to prevent servo back pressure reaction on the master cylinder 20 after the brake pads have been actuated. Fixed stops (not shown) may be provided on the axle casing to limit the arcuate movement of the torque arm 2 when the follower piston 9 reaches the limits of the cam profile 8.
