Abstract

734,271. Disc brakes. BRITISH MESSIER, Ltd. April 17, 1953 [Jan. 22, 1952], No. 1764/52. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake, a brake-yoke-carrier has a cylindrical bore which extends in a direction transverse with respect to the brake disc within which slides a cylindrical brake-yoke having a return arm which spans the edge of the disc and is provided with friction pads to engage opposite faces of the disc, the movable mounting of the yoke relatively to the carrier permitting axial movement to equalize the braking forces on opposed sides of the disc. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, a brake disc 14 is rotatable with the vehicle wheel through an adaptor 10. A non-rotatable brake carrier 15 comprises a plate which carries two hollow guide cylinders 19 inside which are assembled brake yokes 20 which have a sliding movement in the guide cylinders parallel to the wheel axle; rotation of the yokes being prevented by keys 120. Each yoke has an arm 21 which terminates in a return arm 22 to which is secured a friction pad 26. The main body of the yoke is bored through coaxially with its exterior to house a piston 24 which carries a brake pad 25. A cover 27 is secured to the yoke 20 and supports a lever and plunger means 28, 29, 30 for manual actuation of the brake in event of failure of the hydraulic system. In operation, hydraulic fluid under pressure is forced into the space between the piston 24 and the cover 27 to apply the friction pad 25. The reaction forces the yoke arms axially in the opposite direction to apply the brake pad 26, so that the pressure exerted on the two sides of the disc is equalized. The Provisional Specification describes alternative constructions to that shown in Fig. 1 in which the yoke is pivoted to the non-rotatable axle, or alternatively, is made to slide longitudinally upon it on splines.
